Hello and welcome to the Alternative Layers exhibition; an exploration of movement through multitudinous space, uncovering the layers in between. The Alternative Layers exhibition is an exploration of space from each artist’s perspective. The term ‘space’ is not used to refer to emptiness or a plain void of life or things, rather here it is used expansively to encompass space in the physical, psychological, metaphorical and spiritual sense. Each artist’s work is a depiction or a negotiation of one or more of these spaces. The distancing from, and losing or finding themselves within it.Throughout the exhibition, a wide range of artistic mediums and approaches are taken, from sculpture, drawing, painting, and film, to convey the scope of the subject in which it contends, but also to reflect the diversity of life.

Alison is a multi-media, experimental artist. For the Alternative Layers exhibition, she will be focusing on the theme of incarceration in relation to physical, psychological, and spiritual space. Our venue, Bridewell Studios, was once a police station – the jail cells are now used as art studios. She finds this both fascinating and haunting. She wonders what life was like for the people who found themselves incarcerated there. Where some of those people suffering from addiction or mental health problems, or victims of abuse or trauma at a time in history when little or no help was available? For the exhibition Alison will be highlighting the darkness and often inescapable ritual of addiction, tapping into her own lived experience. She states that: "while art can be a powerful tool for self-expression and healing, I see a paradox in making art to exorcise my past as it serves as both a ‘way out’ and a reminder of my own physical, psychological, and spiritual incarceration during difficult times."
Chelsea is a conceptual and process based artist working across a range of mediums allowing her to explore many creative possibilities towards the realisation of her ideas.Through her art she is interested in investigating the intersection between inner psychic life and the outer world. She believes this space has infinite potential which can be translated into our lives. However, unconscious images internalised from a young age can work to limit or encourage our navigation of space in its many forms. For the Alternative Layers exhibition she plans to create an installation that symbolises “transitional space” in relation to the formation of the intermediate area of experience between mother and child. She has also conceptualised this project to (in her own words): "stand as a monument that pays homage to all the women who have held space for one another."
Lotzo is a multi-disciplinary artist working with as many different types of media and materials they can get their hands on to explore ideas surrounding personal identity and the ordeal of human consciousness.Their philosophy on both their art and life as a whole is that people are like onions. Humans are composed of tens, hundreds, and thousands of layers that combine to make us all the unique, complete, multifaceted individuals we are. What they are particularly fascinated by is the concept of stripping back these layers one by one in an attempt to find what is contained at the centre of us all... And if there is even anything there to find. For the Alternative Layers exhibition, they want to particularly focus on the layers of ourselves we hide from others. The secrets we bury deep down or hide in plain sight in the hopes that we won’t be ridiculed and cast aside. When asked to explain their intentions further, the artist said: "I want to unearth the dirty laundry we hide in the back of our bedroom cupboards and lay the true nature of it bare for all of us to face."
Mai is a minimalist artist, deeply exploring her ethnic origins through her art. Her work primarily uses wood, DIY craft items, and construction materials connected to her heritage and is a personal exploration of these spaces. She commits herself to crafting intricate yet straightforward designs through carpentry, creating installations that merge natural and synthetic materials. Her minimalist style, marked by modular and repetitive patterns, mirrors her childhood experiences and traumas, offering a unique lens on negotiating space. In Alternative Layers, her art, characterised by its simple, natural, and earthy colour palette, expresses her cultural roots and participates in a broader dialogue about space and identity. Her participation in this exhibition is an opportunity to share her perspective on negotiating various spaces and to engage with the rich tapestry of interpretations presented by fellow artists.
Nadia is a multimedia artist who loves experimenting with painting, 3D design, prints, graphics, photography and combining all of these in one project to communicate her message to the audience. Also, she is an impressionist artist who works to capture and transfer on canvas a person’s emotion, or a corner of nature so that it stays frozen in time and the viewers can see the beauty that surrounds us and relate to the feelings conveyed. For the Alternative Layers exhibition, she wants to attempt to give life to the space by creating the illusion of expansion from one single point to the whole space provided. The project would start on a piece of canvas with a landscape on it and it would grow by entering the 3D world with its branches, leaves and flowers continuing expanding on the walls, ceiling and floor. This way, she wants to create connection between the nature and the inanimate objects. Her aim is to "transform a piece of architecture into a feeling".
Sophie is a visual, multimedia artist. She has a very collaborative approach to her practice which is predominantly based around capturing movement and explorations in space. Her work is a tangled web of experiences like; drawing the movement of dancers, dancers interpreting those drawings back into physical movements, capturing that on film and then creating videos from the footage. She enjoys the entanglement and layers to the process. For the Alternative Layers exhibition, she wants to create an experience for the viewers. She is really drawn to people in her practice and feed off their experiences and energy so she will be using Alternative Layers as an exciting opportunity to see how the general public react to the expanded field of drawings by creating an immersive experience for them.
Ellie's work explores themes of loss, memory, trauma, and loneliness. By focusing on drawing through intuition, she hopes to capture her subconscious and state of mind. Her dreams, emotions and life experiences inspire her practice. Ellie aims to depict her ongoing journey of understanding emotions and the darker, more unsettling aspects of consciousness. For the upcoming Alternative Layers exhibition, Ellie will capture subconscious emotions through the medium of charcoal. She aims to invite viewers into a captivating exploration of the intricate layers of emotion that shape our existence.
